For anyone worried about cost: some practical options:

  • Many insurance plans cover therapy, especially with a mental health diagnosis (anxiety, depression, disordered eating)
  • Open Path Collective offers sliding scale therapy ($30-$80/session)
  • Psychology Today's therapist finder lets you filter by specialty and insurance
  • Some employers offer EAP (Employee Assistance Program) — usually 6-8 free sessions
  • Online therapy (BetterHelp, Talkspace) can be more affordable, though quality varies

Also: group therapy is an option and significantly cheaper. Sometimes just being in a room (or Zoom) with other people going through the same thing is enough to start.

This thread convinced me. I just booked a consultation with a therapist who lists "obesity and weight management" as a specialty. I've been on Mounjaro for 4 months, losing weight, but emotionally I'm a mess. I thought the weight loss would make me happy and instead I'm just... sad and confused all the time.

Thank you for normalizing this. I thought I was the only one who lost weight and felt worse emotionally.

You're not the only one, and it's incredibly common. When food is no longer available as a coping mechanism, all the feelings it was suppressing come flooding in. It can feel like emotional whiplash.

Think of it this way: the medication removed the dam. Therapy helps you build channels for the water to flow through safely.

I'm so glad you booked that consultation. It's a brave step. Go in with honesty and see how it feels. The right therapeutic relationship can change your life as much as the medication did.

This thread is everything I hoped it would be. Look at us all supporting each other, sharing resources, being vulnerable.

One more thing I want to add: therapy doesn't have to be forever. I go weekly now, but my therapist and I have already talked about moving to biweekly once I'm more stable. The goal is to build your own internal toolkit, not to be in therapy for the rest of your life (unless you want to be — no judgment).

But starting is the hardest part. And every single one of you who is considering it: I'm proud of you. This work is worth doing.
