The alcohol thing is what convinced me this medication is actually working on brain chemistry and not just "making you less hungry." The food reduction — okay, maybe placebo, maybe just feeling full. But accidentally quitting a 15-year daily drinking habit? That's not placebo. That's neuroscience.

Down from 4-5 beers a night to maybe 2 a week. My sleep is better, my anxiety is lower, my mornings are clearer. I didn't even realize how much the alcohol was degrading my quality of life until it was gone.

Addiction medicine physician here. I want to validate what everyone is experiencing and add some clinical nuance.

We are very excited about GLP-1 RAs in the addiction medicine field. The preclinical data on alcohol, nicotine, and even opioid use reduction is compelling. The mechanism — modulation of mesolimbic dopamine — makes theoretical sense, as substance use disorders share overlapping neurocircuitry with compulsive overeating.

However, a few cautions:

  1. Do not abruptly stop alcohol if you are a heavy daily drinker. Alcohol withdrawal can be medically dangerous. Taper under medical supervision.
  2. If you find your alcohol use decreasing, use this as an opportunity to build non-chemical coping skills. Meditation, therapy, exercise, social connection.
  3. If you stop the GLP-1 medication, the reward-modulation effect may wane. Plan for this.

But overall — if you're drinking less and feeling good about it? That is a genuinely positive outcome, even if it wasn't the original intent of the prescription.

I wasn't going to post but I feel like I have to.

I was drinking a handle of vodka every 3 days. I knew I was an alcoholic. I was ashamed and hiding it and slowly destroying my marriage and my health.

My doctor prescribed Wegovy for my weight. Three months later, the vodka bottle in my cabinet has been there for 6 weeks untouched. I don't think about it. I don't crave it. I don't sneak it.

I know this medication didn't "cure" my alcoholism. I know I have work to do. I started therapy last month. But this medication gave me the SPACE to start doing the work. The compulsion lifted just enough for me to catch my breath and ask for help.

I owe this drug my marriage. Maybe my life.

What a powerful thread. A few important notes:

1. If you're experiencing reduced alcohol desire on GLP-1 medication, this is a documented phenomenon and you're not alone.
2. If you were a heavy drinker, please consult with your physician before making significant changes — alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous.
3. This forum is not a substitute for professional addiction support. If you think you may have an alcohol use disorder, please reach out to SAMHSA's helpline: 1-800-662-4357.

Thank you all for your honesty and vulnerability here. These conversations save lives.
